Waterford Road Runners - Winter League Week 12 – Final Week Over! New

Final week over!
Congratulations and well done to all that completed the 11th Waterford Road Runners Winter League. Last week’s final night was an unmitigated success with lots of runners getting pbs over both routes. The inspiration, no doubt, was that this was to be their last chance until November to beat their best. The weather was perfect on the night which no doubt helped.

Party time
The crowd that turned out at the Munster Bar for the prize giving was fantastic. Staff at the bar didn’t know what hit them! Of course it was sparkling waters and orange juices all round, runners never drink. For anyone who was unable to hear, and our apologies for that, the winners announced on the night were :

2.5 Mile Ladies
Claire Egan
Patricia O'Keeffe
Orla Byrne
Ellen Collins

2.5 Mile Mens
Brian O'Keeffe
Aidan Galvin
Des O'Leary
Colm Whelan

5 Mile Ladies
Jennifer Tobin
Una Fleming
Katrina Foley
Sinead Phelan

5 Mile Mens
Eddie Murphy
Mike Considine
Alan Graham
Paul Windle

Winner ok!
While specifically reward those that have improved the most steadily over the course of the winter, we like to point out that everyone is a winner. Whether it’s because you’ve just started running for the first time and completed the 2.5 mile route each night, or you’re somewhat more advanced and managed the 5 miles this year. You also contributed greatly to the thousands of euro we were able to give away, and maybe you met new running buddies to train with along the way. This is the point of the winter league, to show you the enjoyment running can bring to yourselves and others. Keep it up!  If you were not there to receive your prize on the night, contact 087 9384521 for follow up.

Thank you!
Firstly, thanks to all the runners who braved each night to get their weekly fix. Also braving the elements, were the fantastic marshalls that Con Kelliher had in place each night for your safety. We could do without a lot of things and still run a winter league, but the marshalls are an absolute must! Our timekeepers Des and Kieran, with registration help from Jacinta, Declan and Tara, printing by Cooke and Power printers, and web results by Alan Crookes made sure your entries and results were accurate. If your handicap was wrong…that’s a different issue! Derek for his (loud) words of encouragement at the start and Declan for his encouragement (read: slagging) near the finish. John Walsh and the staff of the RSC have delivered first class service to us each year of the league, with no request too much. The Order of Malta are like the VHI…you need to have them, but you don’t want to need to use them! Our thanks to Michael and the gang.

What’s next?!
Be sure to look out for information closer to November and stay in touch via Facebook. Until then, do not sit on your laurels! You have the Kilmacthomas 5 miler on Sunday next at 11am, the Dungarvan 10k the following Sunday, The WIT 5k in Carriaganore … the list goes on. Don’t be put off by the bigger distances just because you’ve only done the 2.5 miler; use a run, walk approach, 2 mins run, 1 min walk. No excuses! Check out www.westwaterfordathletics.org and www.waterfordac.com for further details. Of course the obvious aim for the next 5 months is Waterford’s first marathon on June 30th. If the full 26 plus miles is too much for you yet, why not go for the half marathon option, or get a friend or two together and enter a relay team. A lot of runners have started training in earnest already. Check out some pics on facebook under Waterford Viking Marathon of the Sunday morning training sessions from Superquinn at 9am. With both full and half marathon training groups catered for, it’s ideal to get you to your goal in June. If you haven’t already entered the marathon, do so it now on www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com.

More Marathon Sponsorship Options
Don’t forget that even though the charities to benefit from this year’s first marathon have been selected as the Alzheimers Association and the Hospice, you can still raise sponsorship for a charity of your choice. One option might be the Fighting Blindness campaign.  Fighting Blindness funds world-leading research into cures and treatments for blindness. It also provides a unique professional counselling centre for people with visual impairments and their families.  To support Fighting Blindness, or to request a sponsorship card,  contact them today on 01 7093050 or fundraising@fightingblindness.ie.
