Munster titles won

A very cold Nenagh was the venue last Saturday and Sunday last for the Munster junior and u 23 Indoor Championships as well as the under age Combined Events and Waterford athletes did very well. Waterford AC and Tramre AC had a very good week end in each grade, Cian O’Brien won two under 23 titles the long and high jumps and in the same age group Grace Furlong was second in the long jump Twins Anna and Orla O’Connor both won junior titles, Anna the 1500 metres and Orla the 3000 metres walk, their junior men’s relay team were third in the 4x 200 metres, the squad being Lance Baylon, Anthony Mc Aulliffe, James Mc Carthy and Eoin Kenny. For Tramore Shane Monagle won the junior hurdles title and Mark Hartery was second. Denise O’Connor won the 60 metres hurdles, 200 metres and 400 metres was second in the 60 metres and shot putt. For West Waterford Patrick Fitzgerald won the junior pole vault and Jurig Kanass was second in the under 23 pole vault. The senior women’s walk over 3000 metres was also on the program and it was combined with the junior event and holder Kate Veale West Waterford was pushed all the way by Orla O’Connor Waterford who finished a close second less than two seconds between them.

Combined Events

In the Under Age Combined Events Emily O’Mahony Waterford AC won the Youths title and Sarah Abullo from the same club was second under 12, and for Ferrybank Katie Nolke was second under 15 and Paula Igwe third u 16.

Matteo does well in Antrim

On Saturday last the Annual Antrim X Country International races were held with Kenyans first home in both the men’s and women’s races.Also on there were the Celtic under 17 and under 20 Internationals involving Ireland Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Matteo Mary Waterford AC was on the Irish u 17 Development team and in a field of over 70 he did very well to finish 25 th and the third scoring member of his team that finished third behind Irish first team and Wales.

Ferrybank win Wexford team prize

On Sunday last the Annual Ferrycarrig 5 miles road race in Wexford had a large entry including quite a few from Waterford. The overall winner was Mick Clohessy from Raheny and Andrew Connick Ferrybank was 4th overall and Trevor Power Waterford 5 th. The Ferrybank team of Connick, Warren Roche and Craig O’Brien won the team prize and Waterford with Power, Brian Swaby and John Byrne were third club. Craig O’Brien Ferrybank was first junior home, Adele Walsh St Senan’s first over 40 and Siobhan Kennedy first over 50. First lady home was Fiona Kehoe Kilmore

Sunday’s Munster Championship fixture

On Sunday next January 14 in Nenagh the Munster Senior and Master’s Indoor Championships start at 10 am, There will be a large representation from Waterford clubs at both Championships. In the Master’s there will be many men and women competing in various age categories.

Saturday 20th All Ireland Combined Events all age groups Athlone. Sunday 21 st Munster Juvenile Indoor Relay Championships Nenagh. Sunday 28th All Ireland junior and under 23 Championships Athlone.

Waterford Schools X Country

On Friday January 26th Waterford Secondary Schools X Country Championships are in St Augustine’s College Grounds Abbeyside.

January Road Race

Sunday January 21 st St Paul’s Parish Annual Frank Leahy Memorial 5 miles Road Race and 3 miles walk. Starting near St Paul’s Church in the City, walk 12.30 pm, run 1pm.
