In Athlone on Saturday last the National Indoor Combined Events for all ages were held and two athletes from Waterford AC at both ends of the age scale did well. Tom O’ Brien competed in the over 50 age group and was in fine form as he took the gold medal with a total of 2566 points ,some 200 more than the previous record in his age group while Emily O’Mahony was third in the Youths section with 2745 points.
Ferrybank AC sent a number of teams to Nenagh on Sunday last for the Munster Juvenile Indoor Inter Club Relay Championships and one team won and another was third. The under 19 girls team won, the squad being Lorna Monaghan, Katie Murphy Amy Redmond and Zoe Kiely .and the girls u 10 were third the team being Lily Gallagher, Zoe Kenny, Cora Miller and Lily Power. Relays are ideal team events to give races to all club members
155 competed in the Annual Frank Leahy Memoral Run over 5 miles in the city and surrounding areas on Sunday last and Brian Murphy Carrick on Suir was a clear winner in 26 minutes 45 seconds, James Hamm Portlaoise was second in 27.23 and Warren Roche Ferrybank was third in 27.30. First lady home was Siobhán Kennedy Focus on Fitness in 33.52, Ruth Comerford Waterford AC was second in 34.37 and Eimear Mc Sweeney Focus on Fitness was third in 35.57. The category winners were.Ladies F40 Sandra Fitzpatrick (ind) 37;13 and F 50 Norma Goggin Waterford Triathlon Club 42:41 and men Junior Matteo Mary Waterford 28:06, M40 Frank Quinlan do 28:22, M50 . Conor Geary, (ind) 32:49, M60 Joe Gough West Waterford. 31:03. A 3 miles walk was also held with a fine entry including Fr Pat Fitzgerald St Paul’s PP and lots of Scouts, and men, women and children, St Paul’s Parish benefited from the event, and Waterford Health Park helped with sponsorship. Cllr Sean Reinhardt Mayor of the Waterford Metropolitan area attended and Kieran Leahy was official starter. It as a very enjoyable affair despite the rainy conditions Well done to all involved in the organisation and those looking after refreshments and thanks to Order of Malta.
The 30 th Annual Colligan Cup run in Colligan Wood last Sunday had an entry of 125. In this event athletes predict the time it will take them to cover the 5 miles and the athlete with the nearest time but not outside it wins. This year that athlete was Brigid Coffey West Waterford her time being dead on, It was race 3 of the Michael Roche Carpets Series. The Mc Grath Newsagents Juvenile section had an entry of 60 and the winner was Kevin Butler. The Victor Mullins Perpetual Cup winner was David Traynor and the special 30 years of the race prize went to Vincent O’Donovan.
On Friday next January 26th the Waterford Secondary Schools X Country Championships for boys and girls are in St Augustine’s College Grounds Abbeyside, with four grades minor ,junior ,intermediate and senior. First race 11 am
On this Wednesday January 24th at 7 pm the AGM of Waterford A.C. senior club is in The Viking Hotel (Ramada) Cork Road and all members asked to attend.

The Credit Union Overall Supreme Young Athlete for 2017 will be announced at a function in The Dome WIT on this Friday January 26th at 7.15 pm. 12 monthly winners in the under 13 to under 19 age groups as per the rules will be vying for the title, 8 eight from Waterford AC, two from Tramore and one each from West Waterford and Ferrybank, guest speaker is a lady well known in Waterford, Olympian Marathon Runner Lizzie Lee Leevale Cork. Clubs should note that for nominations of monthly winners only results achieved in that month considered and for overall all results of an individual during the year considered
The following are the dates for the above series in 2018. Friday April 20th Faugheen, Friday 4th May Portlaw, Friday 1st June Carrick on Suir Deadman’s, Friday July 27th Piltown. Just four races this year. So many dates already up in the public arena and the advice to all planning a race keep it well clear of races already fixed if you want yours to be a success.
